For this project, I explore ideas of the grid as the framework for design through the traditional craft of rug knotting and hand drafting to question the differences of craft and medium. Both processes involve repetitive movements that build the composition. By drafting out the rug by hand first, I intentionally adhere to the grid structure, but also defy its monotony with human error. During the process of knotting the rug, each knot is made to reinforce the vertical and horizontal structure of the cloth, yet the finished pile moves rhythmically disrupting its subliminal structure. The composition of this piece reflects the structure which lies beneath the surface which makes this paradox more apparent. By completing the draft and the textile, I can observe the ways in which both inform the design process through this interdisciplinary practice. Producing the textile object gives an understanding of materiality and shows how the initial design translates through the interlocked structure of the pile; therefore, craft and design are always dependent on one another.
