For the this project, I studied the painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944). In her abstract paintings, she depicted spiritual visions as large colorful geometric shapes. Her use of non-objective forms and expressive use of color predate the German Expressionist movement which led the art world into abstraction in the 1920s. I was drawn to the expressive line work in Kint’s paintings and her innovative use of color. The swirling lines resemble calligraphic text, suggesting the presence of a message embedded in the paint. These lines allow Klint’s voice to be heard long after her passing. I was inspired by her story and used her paintings as a reference for color and composition in this collection.
